What is a Wax Spur Embedder?

A wax spur embedder is a tool built in a soldering iron style. It is often heated to make it work better. Wax spur embedders may be heated over a fire. A wax spur embedder has a wheel that hugs the wire in your beehive frame. It pushes the wire into wax foundation and gives you better embedded wire for strong wax foundation. A spur embedder is used for embedding wire into wax foundation onto beehive frames.

How to Wire and Embed a Beehive Frame

To successfully wire a beehive frame, you need a small hammer, eyelets, bee wire, crimper, nails, and an eyelet punch. For embedding, you need a spur embedder and the wax foundation you will be embedding wire into.

1. Installing eyelets – Using an eyelet punch, install eyelets into the sides of your beehive frame. 2 eyelets per side are enough for most beehive frames.
2. Installing wire – add wire onto the frame by passing it through the eyelets you installed. Tighten the wire around a small nail in the side of the frame and snip off excess wire.
3. Crimping bee wire – Holding the beehive frame vertically, use a crimper to tighten the bee wire on the frame. You should then nail it down to keep it tight.
4. Installing foundation – To install foundation, weave the wax foundation through the wire on your beehive frame. The foundation should slide into the groove on the inside of the frame.
5. Embed wire – Once the foundation is in place, la the frame on an embedding board. Use the embedding spur you have to push the bee wire into wax foundation. The foundation should be at room temperature for best result.
