The smoker is an important tool for successful backyard beekeeping.

One of the most important parts of beekeeping is taking care of your hive. Bees can be moody, especially if they think they're being attacked or their hive is being invaded. Using a smoke smoker is the best way to keep your bees calm while keeping yourself from getting stung. It wasn't until 1873 that Moses Quinby, the father of American beekeeping, invented the first smoke blower.

2. So how does a smoke smoker affect bees

When bees think they are being attacked, they release pheromones that alert the hive that they are being attacked. The smoke prepares the bees to leave the hive because they think it's on fire. They started eating lots of honey, thinking they needed energy to find a new home. Beekeepers check their hives to make sure they are healthy. Our goal is never to harm the colony. Once filled with honey, the bees are quiet.

3. A few tips for using a smoke smoker

Some beekeepers spray smoke on their hands/gloves and tools in advance, apparently for the smell to keep bees away. I don't know if it works, but feel free to give it a try.

• Fill the chimney with enough fuel. You don't want it to get out during the inspection.
• Spray a little smoke into the entrance of the hive before opening the lid. Think of this as letting your bees know, "Hey, I'm in!"
• Smoke is no substitute for gentleness, calmness and wisdom. Be careful when checking bees and only work in the hive when the weather is good.
• Don't smoke too much. Unless you're working with a particularly aggressive colony, a few puffs will suffice.
• If you get stung, smoke it. Once one bee stings you, you can be sure that other bees will get upset and start stinging you. That's where the smoke comes in.
