Summary :Honey bees are masters of wintering. But for the most part, our modern bees find themselves living in man-made structures that are different from the homes they built for themselves. To make up for this difference, beekeepers often need to adjust hives to prepare the bees for prolonged confinement.

When we talk about bees, we must think that bees are industrious insects. They are busy among flowers and collect nectar all day long. But in winter, bees cannot collect honey because of the lack of honey sources outside. In addition, the cold weather makes bees enter the wintering period. How do bees spend the cold winter?

1. Hunger prevention: whether the feed in the whole wintering period is of high quality and sufficient quality is related to the success of the honeybee wintering. High quality feed can ensure that most of the bees can be digested after eating, and the honeybee colony will be quiet and stable, have a long life, not fade in spring, and reproduce quickly in spring; If the feed quality is poor, the bees will digest less after eating, resulting in more residue. If the feces are depressed in the intestines, it is easy to form belly disease. Some of the mild cases will die, and a large number of bees will die.

2. Heat prevention: The suitable temperature for honeybees to overwinter is 2-8 ℃. The honeybees in dormant state gather together and rely on honey storage to maintain their life. However, there are many days when the temperature is above 8 ℃ throughout the winter. The honeybees have a large amount of activity, a lot of feed consumption, workers are aging fast, and are not easy to reproduce in spring. Therefore, to prevent heat, ventilation, watering, or electric fans can be used to cool down.

3. Cold prevention: during the winter, the activity of bees will also increase when the temperature is below - 2 ℃, mainly to increase their food intake, keep swinging their bellies, and generate heat energy to resist the cold, which not only consumes a lot of feed but also shortens the life of worker bees; If there are small bees, they can bask in the sun during the day. At night, they should close the nest door as small as possible to fill the gaps in the box and wind tunnel to prevent cold current from invading the gaps.

4. Anti dryness: Spray water properly in the bee farm to increase humidity and prevent dryness, so as to prevent bees from thirsty and feed drying and crystallization. After all, bees have no teeth, and the feed will not be available after the crystallization becomes hard.

5. Damp proof: During the winter, the humidity in the hive is 70% - 80%, and the feed with humidity above 80% is easy to become damp, thin and deteriorated. If the bees are easy to get sick and have diarrhea after eating, etc; If the humidity in the hive is relatively high, a layer of plastic film should be placed under the hive, or some quicklime and dry slag should be spread around the hive, or the bees can be allowed to fly and excrete in a planned way in sunny days above 10 ℃.

6. Light proof: bees like dark environments. If they are stimulated to fly away from their nests by strong external light, outdoor hives should be covered with light proof cloth to avoid light, so as to minimize the energy consumption of bees when flying in the air.

7. Prevention of stuffiness: There must be fresh air when bees are wintering in the hive. It is necessary to prevent dead bees and sundries from blocking the hive door, leading to suffocation of bees. It is also necessary to prevent snow from closing the hive door. Therefore, it is necessary to check the external conditions of the hive every day.

8. Shockproof: Bees prefer a quiet environment and are afraid of vibration and noise. In particular, they are weak in the late winter, and feces in their abdomen are intolerable. If they are frightened by vibration, they often suffer from spleen dropping and freeze to death. Therefore, they should keep quiet in the bee farm to avoid loud noises, such as setting off firecrackers and making loud noises.

9. Disease prevention: keep the hive clean and sanitary, and pay attention to disinfection to prevent the occurrence of diseases and pests such as bee mites.

10. Enemy prevention: If the protective measures are not in place during the winter, rats will bite the hive, steal honey and destroy the nest spleen. If there is any sign of mouse activity in the bee farm, poison bait and equipment can be used to kill it.
